What do I look for in a hosting company ?

Web Hosting FAQ

Part 1

This is the one of the singular most common yet important question.

The main reason is that web masters are comparing all the WRONG Specifications with different hosting companies as nearly two thirds of what is usually offered is totally not useful to webmaster.

The most common things to look for when you are hosting a small business or personal site are :

1. Email accounts

Try to give every employees you currently have within your office, including future personal explanation plans.

2. Easy & Quick Setup

Should be less than 5 hours, as some company take up to 48 hours to set up a new account.

3. Sufficient Data Transfer

This is the most misunderstood specifications of web hosting, technically speaking most sites just only need about 1 GB. Yes, I know what you are thinking, that's right !

4. Uptime Guarantee

This is very important. If they aren't offering it, they can't guarantee it which is a bad sign.
A 98% Uptime Guarantee or above is deem to be average.

5. Sufficient Disk Storage Space

Most sites only need up to 50 MB, so don't be greedy or are enticed by the seller providing over the top storage as you won't need it & are just paying for nothing !)

6. 24/7 Live Support

Good to have, but not necessary if you are just beginning to built your website empire as you will have to pay more for this, but it comes in real handy if you site is down !

Live chat usually works just as good as phone support.

Can I switch hosting companies if I don't like their services ?

YES, off course. Who is there to stop you from do so ?

Unfortunately, there are many people whom do not realize how easy it is to switch hosting companies.

All you have to do is re-publish your site to the new address for the new hosting company. Most hosting companies will give you your new IP address where you can publish your site in as little as 10-20 minutes !

Just publish your site, and don't forget to update your name servers. This just means that you will have to go to the company where you purchased your domain name, and put in the name servers that the new hosting company have.

Your domain name will point to your new hosting account in about 24 - 48 hours. Also, you will need to create your new email addresses at the new hosting company. That's it !

So, don't feel like you are stuck with a bad hosting company.

Because you're not.

Do I have to buy my domain name with my hosting account ?

No & Yes.

No, you can buy your domain name anytime. So, don't loose the domain name you want just because you are researching hosting companies. Buy that now.

But, don't pay more than $20/year since that is the average price these days.

Yes, if you have not initially purchase it already. If you purchase domain name & hosting account together, some company whom offered both these services may at their own discretion provide a better deals or discount.

So it really depends on what you want to do.

Getting Back Links

The actual definition of a back links from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia are quoted as follows :-

"Backlinks are incoming links to a website or web page. The number of backlinks is an indication of the popularity or importance of that website or page. In basic link terminology, a backlink is any link received by a web node (web page, directory, website, or top level domain) from another web node (Björneborn and Ingwersen, 2004). Backlinks are also called as incoming links, inbound links, inlinks, and inward links.

Search engines often use the number of backlinks that a website has as one of the factors for determining that website's search engine ranking. For example, Google's PageRank algorithm uses backlinks to help determine a site's rank.

To see a site's PageRank, you need to use the Google Toolbar for Microsoft's Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox, view the bar graph indicating a website's PageRank in Google's directory, or download the PageRank plugin for Mozilla Firefox."

It is therefore of paramount importance, especially the new webmaster to quickly establish back links to his or her website.

As such, one of my fellow internet entrepenuer from Malaysia, Mr Gobala Krishnan, is offering anyone to have his/her sites link to his.

If you review his blog, he’ll link back to you and send you a ton of traffic. It’s a great informative blog so you lose nothing at all.

Do so immediately.

Today, lets discuss the value of having a business mentor or coach to greatly enhanced your existing business and bringing it to a even higher level or plane.

Basically, a business mentor / coach, is someone whom have more entrepreneurial business experience than you and whom will serves you as a trusted confidante over an extended period of time.

Why do this ?

Because your entrepreneurial journey would not have been as successful as it has been if it weren't for this individual in your life.

You should be able to talk to your mentor on a level that I can with very few people. When you find someone who has the knowledge and experience to help you get to where you want to go, make it happen.

I meet entrepreneurs on a regular basis, and the one's that seem to be the most successful are the one's that have learned from those before them.

So how do you find your mentor ?

I don't believe that finding a mentor can be considered a science, but you want to look for a number of key characteristics.

Find someone who has accomplished goals that might be similar to yours. Find someone who is open to providing time and energy to help you achieve these goals. Find someone who you are willing to listen to, even when you might not want to. And, find someone who has similar values to you. One of the strongest bonds between my mentors and me has been a shared value system.

So, if you are on the entrepreneurial journey and you don't currently have a mentor, find one and see your entrepreneurial dreams come true !

Finally, I like to leave you with the following simple steps :-

Tips on Building a Senior Management Team
  • Start with part-timers. You may not be able to afford a full-time chief financial officer at first, but chances are you can find one who will gladly work part time.
  • Look for volunteers. The SCORE Association is one place to start and may help you establish a volunteer advisory board. Also check with your local business schools.
  • Consider outsourcing your management team. Check the Yellow Pages under Employment Agencies, Employee Leasing, Executive Search Consultants and Management Consultants.
  • Check references and backgrounds, just as you would for a full-time employee. Look for a good fit.
  • Treat part-time and volunteer executives just as you would full-time, paid senior managers. Make them a part of your team.
